INTRODUCTION

Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata was an Indian Pioneer industrialist, who founded TATA group. He is regarded as "FATHER OF INDIAN INDUSTRY".

TATA'S EARLY LIFE

Jamsetji Tata was born  on 3 March 1839 in Navasari, a small town in South Gujarat. He was the first businessman in a family of Parsi Zoroastrian priests. He completed his education as a "GREEN SCHOLAR" at Elphinstone College in 1857  and got married with Hirabai Daboo. After that he joined his father's trading firm.

HIS BUSINESS
Jamsetji worked his father's company until he was 29. He founded a trading company with Rs.21,000 capital in 1868. 

In 1869 - bought a bankrupt oil mill at Chinchpokli and converted it to a cotton mill which is named as " Alexandra Mill" and sold the mill for profit after two years.

In 1874 - set up another  cotton mill at Nagpur named as "Empress Mill"

HIS GOALS

• Setting up Iron and Steel Company
• A world-class learning institution
• A unique hotel.
• A hydro-electric plant.

Though none of his dreams were fully realized during his life time, but the seeds were laid and pathway made.

INTEREST IN STEEL

Interest in steel and iron stirred Jamsetji when he attended a lecture  by Thomas Carlyle in Manchester where he went to check out new machinery for his textile mill. By the end of the trip, he was sufficiently excited by the prospects of setting up a steel plant and by 1880.

TATA'S SUCCESS

Though Jamsetji had passed away by the time, the first ingots rolled out of the production plant in 1912, his spirit and efforts were carried forward by his zealous son Dorab and cousin R.D. Tata, in the later years.
